James Madison University Carrier Library

Harrisonburg, VA | General Contractor: Kjellstrom & Lee

Carrier Library has long been a place where the James Madison University community comes to study, collaborate, and connect. As those needs have evolved over the years, so has the library itself. As part of its expansion and renovation in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Skyline Roofing partnered with Kjellstrom & Lee to complete a commercial roofing project that combined modern roofing assemblies with timeless architectural finishes, helping protect a campus landmark that's ready to serve today's students while remaining true to the building that generations of Dukes have known.

The Challenge

Renovating a building as recognizable as Carrier Library meant more than adding new space. The roofing scope needed to connect the existing structure with the expansion while working within the building's established design.

From low slope roofing areas to Ludowici clay tile and custom copper work, every transition required thoughtful planning to create a finished roof that felt cohesive across both the original building and its new addition.

The Solution

To provide dependable weather protection across the renovated and expanded library, Skyline Roofing installed a complete low slope roofing assembly consisting of insulation, roof coverboard, and a fully adhered membrane roof system.

The project also included architectural roofing elements that complement the library's design while helping prepare it for years of continued use:

  • Ludowici clay tile roofing that ties into the library's established architecture across both the renovated and expanded spaces

  • Copper gutters and downspouts that combine lasting durability with timeless craftsmanship

  • Coping and architectural edge metal that provide clean roof transitions while protecting the building's perimeter

  • A roof hatch with an integrated safety railing to support safe access for future inspections and preventative maintenance

Working alongside Kjellstrom & Lee and the broader construction team, Skyline coordinated each phase of the roofing installation to ensure the various assemblies and architectural finishes came together as one complete system.

The Impact

Carrier Library has been part of the JMU experience for decades. This renovation expands what the building can offer today while carrying forward the role it has always played on campus.

Skyline Roofing's work helps support that future through:

  • Dependable weather protection with a fully adhered membrane roof assembly, insulation, and coverboard

  • A thoughtful balance of modern roofing and traditional craftsmanship through low slope membrane roofing, Ludowici clay tile, and architectural copper details

  • Durable water management through new copper gutters and downspouts

  • Protected roof edges and transitions with coping and architectural edge metal

  • Safe rooftop access through a roof hatch and safety railing designed for future inspections and preventative maintenance

From modern membrane roofing to traditional clay tile and custom copper work, this project demonstrates how thoughtful roofing solutions can help existing buildings adapt to changing needs while remaining true to their original character.

Skyline Roofing is proud to partner with Kjellstrom & Lee in helping protect a space that will continue evolving alongside the JMU community for years to come.
