Nathanael Greene Elementary School
Standardsville, VA | SF: 48.658 | General Contractor: Skyline Roofing Inc.
Skyline Roofing partnered with Greene County Public Schools to complete a full roofing replacement at Nathanael Greene Elementary in Standardsville, VA. This project focused on improving long-term performance, drainage, and energy efficiency across the entire building while meeting the Skyline standard of quality and safety.
The Challenge
The existing EPDM roof had reached the end of its service life, with areas of moisture intrusion, deteriorated insulation, and aging ballast creating maintenance concerns for the school. A complete system upgrade was needed to provide reliable protection, improve thermal efficiency, and ensure the roof met modern performance expectations.
The project also required careful sequencing, from ballast removal to substrate inspection, to ensure the new roofing system was installed on a solid, fully restored foundation.
The Solution
The Skyline team began by removing the stone ballast and safely hauling all debris offsite. With the roof exposed, crews cut the existing EPDM membrane in five-foot increments to inspect the insulation below, replacing any compromised sections to ensure long-term performance.
A new layer of 20 PSI, 1-inch polyiso insulation was installed to enhance thermal efficiency and create a smooth, stable substrate for the new system. On top of this, the team mechanically fastened a 60-mil white TPO membrane using induction welding, providing a clean, reflective, and energy-efficient roof surface.
Perimeter details were completed with custom-fabricated 24-gauge Kynar-finished coping for added durability and aesthetics. Existing roof drains were upgraded with aluminum retrofit units, and overflow drains were raised as needed to match the new insulation height. Premium TPO walkway pads were installed to protect high-traffic service areas near roof hatches and HVAC units.
Every flashing detail and termination was installed to manufacturer specifications, ensuring a fully watertight system from edge to edge.
The Impact
This roof replacement provides Nathaniel Greene Elementary with:
Improved thermal performance through new insulation and reflective TPO
Better water management with upgraded drains and raised overflow systems
Increased durability from custom metal coping and reinforced details
Safe service access supported by walkway pads
Reliable long-term protection, backed by a 20-year manufacturer’s warranty and a 2-year contractor warranty
Skyline Roofing is proud to support Greene County Public Schools by delivering a high-performance roof system built to protect Nathanael Elementary for years to come.
