Lynchburg, VA | SF: 3,340 | General Contractor: Skyline Roofing, Inc.
When Holy Cross Catholic Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, needed critical roof repairs, they turned to us for a complete roof replacement that would preserve the building’s historic beauty while enhancing long-term protection. As one of the area's most recognizable churches, Holy Cross holds deep meaning for the community and we were honored to help safeguard its future.
The Challenge
Time and weather had damaged two key sections of the church roof: the upper commons and the sacristy. Each required a unique approach, but both sections demanded careful planning, seamless integration with the existing structure, and durable, long-lasting materials. From aging copper gutters to worn roofing membranes, the goal was clear: restore functionality while preserving the church’s timeless character.
The Solution
Our team developed a customized plan for each roof area, using both EPDM and TPO systems to meet the needs of the structure.
The Upper Commons Roof
We began by removing the existing roof system down to the original wood decking. From there, we installed new insulation and a durable black EPDM membrane; chosen for its weather resistance and reliable seal. To ensure seamless integration with the original slate roof above, the membrane was carefully tucked beneath the slate edge, and walk pads were added at key connection points to minimize wear over time.
To complete the upgrade, we replaced the aging copper gutters and downspouts with brand-new components and installed fresh copper trim along the adjoining walls. A new skylight was also added, improving natural light and resolving previous issues with water intrusion in the space below.
The Sacristy Roof
The existing metal roof over the sacristy was removed and replaced with a clean, gray TPO membrane that was sealed tightly along all adjoining walls for maximum protection. To complete the system, we installed new half-round copper gutters and downspouts, selected to match the church’s architectural details while effectively directing water away from the structure.
The Results
This comprehensive restoration project ensured lasting quality and key improvements, such as:
Enhanced Durability: Weather-resistant EPDM and TPO systems now protect both roof areas, delivering long-term performance and energy efficiency.
Seamless Integration: Roofing materials were expertly tied into the historic slate to preserve the church’s original aesthetic.
Upgraded Drainage: New copper gutters and downspouts improve water flow while aligning with the building’s architectural charm.
Improved Interior Comfort: A newly installed skylight enhances natural lighting and prevents moisture intrusion.
Peace Of Mind: With a 20-year warranty on both systems, durability and expert installation are guaranteed.
