Enhancing JMU’s Student Village with New Roof Systems
This summer, Skyline Roofing embarked on a major roof replacement project at James Madison University, replacing the existing roofs on five dormitory buildings—a collective 100,000 square feet of roofing.
Saving the Dorm from Interior Damage
Each of the dorms previously featured aging slate roofs that had become brittle and prone to leaks, leading to interior damage. Skyline’s work includes removing the old slate, reinforcing the roof deck, and installing a durable new shingle roof system designed to extend the buildings’ lifespan and improve weather protection. The team is also upgrading hidden gutters and fascia to give the buildings a clean, refreshed look.
Facing Challenges During the Project
Every large-scale project brings its own set of complexities, such as:
A Tight timeline: The work must be completed before students return to campus, requiring precise scheduling and coordination.
Many Weather Constraints: The team has faced both intense heat and heavy rain, softening the ground and complicating equipment movement. Protection mats were installed to keep the project on track.
Logistics & Sequencing: With five buildings in progress, material deliveries, crew assignments, and roof staging demanded careful planning to maintain efficiency.
Why It Matters
“It’s important to us to extend the life of these buildings, prevent leaks, and give the residents a safe, dry environment,” says Project Manager Chad Snoddy.
With the new roof systems and upgraded exterior elements, JMU and its students will benefit from:
Improved protection from leaks and water damage.
Extended roof lifespan through stronger materials and updated installation methods.
Refreshed exterior appearance with new fascia and gutter systems.
Enhanced comfort and safety for students and staff year-round.
We’re deeply honored that JMU entrusted Skyline Roofing with this large-scale roofing project. Our manpower, resources, and dedication to quality allow us to meet challenging deadlines and deliver lasting results.
We look forward to seeing these dormitories thrive under their new roofs for years to come—and we’re proud to help keep JMU’s campus covered.
